This section includes my personal goals and self-assessments. I want to keep track of my progress, so I achieve my goals.
In my opinion, I need to work the hardest on my writing skills due to the lack of practise over the years. Since I have been at university, I have shown some improvement in my writing skills, but I understand it will take time and a lot more practise.
My first goal is to become familiar with all styles of writing and learn how to structure and format my essays. My second goal is to acquire a more sophisticated vocabulary to use in my essays and assignments and lastly, I want to be able to express my point of view coherently.
My reading ability is intermediate, I can understand all sorts of texts and I enjoy reading any genre. I prefer to read British literature because I am more familiar with it. I have to read American authors in different subjects at the University this semester. I have not read literature from another variety of English so my goal for reading this semester/term is to read literature in another English variety. I think it is possible to include one into my reading routine.
My listening skills are satisfactory because I have worked in England where I came across people from different backgrounds, for instance, India, Jamaica, and Australia. I also have friends from Liverpool and Newcastle and those British accents are difficult to understand even for British people.
Brighton is a big multicultural city with people from all parts of Europe, which meant I encountered many other accents while living there. To practise my English listening skills, I listen to a variety of music, I watch English films with their original audio, and I listen to stories. My goal for listening this semester is to get more familiar with colloquial expressions and phrases from American English because I sometimes find them difficult to understand.
I feel confident enough to talk to anyone because I can communicate in any situation. There have been a few challenging situations in the past, but I have always managed to communicate without any issues. However, I need to continue to practise speaking because I have a strong Spanish accent and sometimes it can be difficult to understand. I know that it is very hard to achieve a fluent English accent, but I am certain with practise, I will improve. My goals this semester are to work on my pronunciation and to use more phrasal verbs and conditionals in my everyday English.
